About the Artist: Mary Brodbeck

Mary Brodbeck has studied, employed, and taught the traditional methods of Japanese woodblock printmaking since 1998, upon receiving the prestigious Bunka-Cho Fellowship to learn these techniques from Yoshisuke Funasaka in Tokyo. The calm aesthetic and Zen-like qualities of Mary’s landscape have received critical acclaim in both Japan and the United States. Her prints can be found in the permanent collection at the Detroit Institute of Arts and in many collections worldwide.

In 2014, Mary produced a critically acclaimed documentary film Becoming Made, in which she introduces audiences to this centuries old Japanese art form. Mary holds degrees from Michigan State University (BFA industrial design) and from Western Michigan University (MFA printmaking). She lives in Kalamazoo, Michigan with her husband John Schmitt.
