About the Artist: Jean Gumpper

Jean Gumpper responds to landscape as a metaphor for emotions and experiences. She seeks to integrate the memories and sounds of being in the landscape into the making of the print, to integrate the process with form and content. It is a way for her to relive an experience and to share it with others. Gumpper is always looking for water. The sources of her prints are from springs in the Grand Canyon encountered after long, hot hikes, fall river walks, the end of a trail in the mountains

that opens up into a pond reflecting the colors of a sunrise, small plants flowering in arid Death Valley and many other details discovered from both far away and from near her home. To Gumpper, these images become rich in meaning as they suggest resilience, renewal, beauty and new life in a time of constant change.
