Slab Built Earthenware
About the Artist: Jeri HollisterHollister’s freestanding work is built from the ground up, attaching the legs to a base, and adding the other parts until the work is complete. She works intuitively, altering parts in a random manner, allowing them to become the animal. Evidence of the ceramic process, the surface of the extrusions, the edges of the slabs, the finger marks in the wheel thrown parts, all tell a story about how the sculpture evolved.
As Hollister works, she focuses on the process and decisions that she makes one at a time. As a result, when she steps back and looks at the entire piece, she is surprised. From this, Hollister regains a sense of seeing it for the first time.
