Michael Arike

My work is about my reaction to light and the effect it has on color. It is about an unusual juxtaposition of shapes that I see which triggers a response in me. Common places and things take on a richer meaning when taken out of context and etched into a plate. The process seems to elevate the image and give it nobility and permanence. Printmaking has been my medium of choice for many years. I enjoy the complexity and the challenge of working with color in multi-plate aquatints. The overlaying of colors creates a richness and luminosity that is impossible to achieve any other way.
